Kinect Fun Challenge

Microsoft Studios has just announced that they will be sponsoring a special Kinect Fun Labs Challenge as part of the Microsoft World Wide Imagine Cup competition. The competition consists of two rounds; an idea/design round, and a software development round. The top 100 student teams in Round 1 will receive a free Kinect sensor and advance to Round 2. A couple of key dates are:

February 14, 2012: Live Meeting Q&A with the Kinect Labs Captain Dan Waters
March 6, 2012: Team Registration and Round One Design Submittal

The Kinect Fun Labs Challenge is a great opportunity for students in technology clubs, special topics courses, or who want to get recognition for developing applications for the latest technologies. We have a bit of a change in our speakers for this week - below is some brief information about this weeks exciting guests.

Richard Sweet and Bruce Hunt are principals in Oregon Stage Tech, a small start-up that has been creating theatrical lighting technology for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival during the last 7 years and is now preparing to market this new technology to other theaters. Both presenters have deep experience earned in the trenches of Silicon Valley during the emergence of the computer industry. During this presentation, they'll provide anecdotes, some non-obvious lessons learned, and a demo of their latest HW/SW hybrid products.

Dick is a software engineer with a better than average knowledge of hardware; Bruce is a hardware engineer with a better than average knowledge of software. This makes them a good team. Between them they hold nine patents.

Dick was a student of Donald Knuth at Stanford, where he received his PhD in Computer Science. He worked at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) starting in 1972, being present for the invention of the Ethernet, laser printing, the desktop windowing metaphor. After 13 years at PARC, he went to work for Chuck Geschke and John Warnock at Adobe Systems, where he created embedded controllers for the very first laser printers. He later joined the Adobe Advanced Technology Group, where he created a number of projects, including teaching Adobe Acrobat how to capture and display web pages.

Bruce holds a M.S. in Computer Engineering from Stanford and has likewise enjoyed an extensive career at Silicon Valley start-ups and with major companies including Zilog and SRI International. He managed Apple Consulting Engineering Services from 1988 to 1993, creating such products as a "military-spec" Macintosh, greeting card kiosks for Hallmark, a locomotive management system for Burlington Northern RR, and more. Bruce worked as an engineering manager for numerous companies, including managing the ShockWave product at Macromedia and managing Internet Research in the Advanced Technology Group at Adobe Systems.

Dick is a self described “theater junkie” who moved to Southern Oregon because of the Shakespeare Festival. Bruce is a model railroad enthusiast who also enjoys theater.

Lab Update - Purvine Hall

Below is an update on the labs from Troy, Matt, Art, and Josh:

Things are busy for the labs this summer. We are giving all the machines a thorough going through and repairing all the problems. The biggest change you will see this fall is the deployment of DeepFreeze by Faronics. With this software we are going to be able to solve a lot of the problems we were having in the labs. Students will now have Administrative Privileges to the machines to try out new things. When the machines reboot they will go back to a known state. Anything on the local hard drive will be wiped out if its not part of the image. ALWAYS PUT YOUR DATA ON Z DRIVE.

The other change is that roaming profiles will also go away. This is due to all the problems we had with them last year. Hope you all are having a great summer and see you in the fall.

Alumni & Faculty Barbeque

The 5^th Annual Alumni & Faculty Barbeque in Reno was held this past Saturday at Mark Bansemer’s house. It was great seeing so many of the IGT people, our IGT alumni along with alumni from Sacramento and other places. The OIT group included President Chris Maples, Erin Foley - VP for Student Affairs, Tracy Ricketts - Alumni Relations, and Ralph Carestia – Professor CSET were able to attend this year’s annual event.

Thanks to all the alumni that were able to attend and spend some time with their former colleagues along with the OIT faculty and administrators.

Condolences to the Nelson Family

I am sad to report that one of our alumni, Dana A. Nelson Jr. passed away a few days ago. Dana graduated in August, 1999 with a degree in SET.

He is survived by his wife Linda (who had worked in the OIT Library) and his son Dana A. Nelson III, also a SET alumni. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nelson family.

Today I spent some time visiting with a number of key managers and developers at a company in Grants Pass called Pharmacy Computer Services, Inc.. They are doing some exciting things in relation to Web based applications, cloud computing, HCI, testing, etc. If you happen to live in the Grants Pass area and are interested in working THIS SUMMER in an exciting company of about 30 employees please let me (randal.albert@oit.edu) know ASAP and I will provide you with some additional information and a contact name. After visiting with them about our program it appears it would best if you had completed at least the sophomore year of the SET program and had taken CST 236 - Software Systems Testing.

If you have already graduated and are looking for full-time work or would like to return to southern Oregon they would love to talk with you too. I will visit with Jan Goodyear in our career center early next week and she too will be able to provide you with some additional information.

Natural User Interface Leaps Forward with Release of Kinect for Windows SDK Beta

As astute readers of this blog will recall, back in April we reported on the progress of the non-commercial Kinect for Windows Software Development Kit (SDK), offering tantalizing descriptions of its capabilities and inviting you to follow its progress on a dedicated website. Well, I’m pleased to announce that the wait is over: the Kinect for Windows SDK beta was released on June 16, 2011, enabling the next phase of bringing natural user interfaces (NUI) to the PC.

Designed to empower developers, academic researchers, and enthusiasts to explore new ideas and create rich applications, the Kinect for Windows SDK beta, which works with Windows 7, enables human motion tracking, voice recognition, and depth sensing on PCs. The SDK includes drivers, rich APIs for raw sensor streams and natural user interfaces, installation documents, and resource materials. It provides Kinect capabilities to developers who build applications with C++, C#, or Visual Basic by using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. SDK features include:

Raw Sensor Streams: Access to raw data streams from the depth sensor, color camera sensor, and four-element microphone array allows developers to build upon the low-level streams that are generated by the Kinect sensor.
Skeletal Tracking: The capability to track the skeleton image of one or two people moving within the Kinect field of view makes it easy to create gesture-driven applications.
Advanced Audio Capabilities: Audio processing capabilities include sophisticated acoustic noise suppression and echo cancellation, beam formation to identify the current sound source, and integration with the Windows speech recognition API.
Sample Code and Documentation: The SDK contains more than 100 pages of technical documentation. In addition to built-in help files, the documentation includes detailed walkthroughs for most samples provided with the SDK.
Easy Installation: The SDK quickly installs in a standard way for Windows, requires no complex configuration, and the complete installer size is smaller than 100 MB. Developers can get up and running in just a few minutes with a standard standalone Kinect sensor unit (widely available at retail outlets).

Just prior to this general release, we hosted a select group of researchers and enthusiasts at a 24-hour coding marathon here on our Redmond, Washington, campus. These developers were encouraged to build applications in areas of interest to them, including everything from gaming and entertainment to healthcare, science, and education. Their projects are being broadcast on Channel 9 Live on June 16, and can be viewed on demand after the fact. Highlights can be found on Microsoft News Center.

As Anoop Gupta, a distinguished scientist at Microsoft Research stated, “The Kinect for Windows SDK beta from Microsoft Research opens up a world of possibilities for developers to unleash the power of Kinect technology on PCs. We are just at the beginning of Microsoft’s long-term vision for how people will interact with technology more naturally and intuitively.”

All I can add is a question: What are you waiting for? Click on over to the SDK download site, and start building those NUI applications. The SDK is free for development of non-commercial applications, and the only boundaries are those set by your own imagination!

Nick and the Golden Ticket

A few weeks ago Nick Wisner, a junior in our SET program, was selected by Microsoft to receive a Microsoft Golden Ticket. Nick is one of only 50 students across the US to have this opportunity to experience the products, people, and culture of Microsoft. During his all-expense paid trip to Microsoft's headquarters in Washington Nick will have access to Microsoft engineers, unreleased technology, and grassroots innovators. He leaves for his trip tomorrow morning.

TONIGHT -- College of Engineering, Technology, and Management Celebrates Disciplines with Event for Students

Oregon Institute of Technology will celebrate National Engineering Month on Feb. 22, 2011, with a celebration dinner and presentations at the Oregon Tech, Klamath Falls Campus. The event is for students who are currently enrolled in degree programs in the College of Engineering, Technology, and Management and alumni of those programs. The event takes place from 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. in the College Union, second floor, Mt. Mazama Room. The celebration is free.

“February is National Engineering Month and we thought we would expand it and celebrate all the disciplines within our college. It’s a nice opportunity for our students, faculty, and alumni to get together, network, talk about careers, our fields, and enjoy each other’s company,” said Charlie Jones, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Engineering, Technology, and Management.

The evening kicks off at 4:30 p.m. Attendees will receive a free College of ETM tee shirt and can enjoy a complimentary pizza dinner. Jones will provide OIT and College of ETM updates. The keynote speaker is Charles “C.J.” Riley, Ph.D., assistant professor of civil engineering. Riley will present on the collaboratively designed and delivered steel connection teaching sculpture planned for Owens Hall through the One Percent for Art program. The vision is to create an outdoor teaching space that encompasses the aspects of steel connections.

Following the keynote presentation, four concurrent breakout sessions take place at 6:00 p.m. on the second floor of the College Union. Attendees may attend any of the four free presentations.

David Gilroy, Simpson Strong-Tie Company. Gilroy has worked for Simpson Strong-Tie for 15 years. The company has focused on creating structural products that help people build safer and stronger homes and buildings for more than 50 years. A leader in structural systems research and technology, Simpson is one of the largest suppliers of structural building products in the world.

Marcus Blankenship has worked in all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle since leaving Oregon Tech in 1995. He spent 14 years at JELD-WEN before starting CREO Agency in 2007. CREO helps top-tier marketing agencies bring their visions to life on the web and helps businesses develop cost-effective solutions to their problems. He has taught Unix and VB. NET at Oregon Tech. His talk at OIT will focus upon starting and running a small business.

The Five-Course – Lessons in Professional Dining Etiquette will be held Thursday, February 17, 5:30 PM in Mt. Mazama room, College Union.

This is an energetic and interactive session including a five course meal to review dining etiquette. You will learn appropriate etiquette for professional dining, and learn how to conduct yourself during a formal dining setting for business or social occasions.

Makeover (Electric) with Prof Long, Josh Dutton, Jeff Conradt, and John Hayes

ASHLAND — A gas-powered 2006 Ford Ranger that might have otherwise been destined for a wholesale auction will find new life as an electric vehicle. Ashland electric-vehicle company Ambiente Motors will install the electric power train in January, splitting the cost with SOU, and a team of researchers from Oregon Institute of Technology will compile data on the truck's operations.

Once the electric engine is ready to go, our very own professor Jim Long, along with software engineering students Josh Dutton, Jeff Conradt and John Hayes, will install software to track the Ranger in real time!

You can learn more about this exciting project in this article or by talking with either Jim, Josh, Jeff, or John.

There is also talk that if the project goes well they may be converting Todd's Spyder in the spring!

Mike Force, Oregon Tech alumnus and successful aerospace engineer, gives a poignant reminder of the value of an Oregon Tech education in his presentation “The role of an Oregon Tech education on a successful career” on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Oregon Tech College Union Auditorium. The presentation is free and open to everyone. Learn how an education from Oregon Institute of Technology contributed to the trajectory of Mike Force’s exceptional career as an aerospace engineer.

Force graduated from Oregon Tech in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering technology. He credits his Oregon Tech education as the launch pad for his exceptional career which spans the gamut of industry, military and academics.

He is currently employed by The Boeing Company and supports all Boeing airplane models in electrical systems projects and performs regulatory compliance approvals for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

His past industry experience includes working at The Boeing Company in aircraft systems design and development work on the Boeing 737, 747, 767, 777, and 787 programs. He also spent three years on the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) team at Honeywell.

Force also teaches aviation safety at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where he earned his M.S. in aeronautical science. He is also a retired commander in the Naval Air Reserve.

Force’s private company, Aircraft Certification Specialists, LLC is a growing business with projects supporting Learjeat, Hondajet, and Eclipse Aviation.

Mars Reach Program - JP presentation WED @ 4 - 5 pm -- PV 208

The Mars Reach Program at Oregon Tech launches and tracks weather balloons for various high altitude experiments. As part of a Junior Project, a team of 4 CSET students created a software system to be used to solve the problem of dynamically tracking and predicting weather balloon flight paths. The flight of the balloon was mathematically modeled and coded into the system. The system used altitude estimations together with wind data from the flight to continuously update the estimated landing location of the payload.

Wednesday Nov. 3^rd, 4 - 5 p.m. in Purvine 208, we will describe the software and mathematical components of the project and we will discuss the results including recommendations for future prediction systems.

Anyone interested is encouraged to attend.

PV 147 Lab Update

PV 147 has now been repainted, the walls fixed, the machines rebuilt, etc. In the next few weeks this lab, along with most of the other labs, will have Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, Office 2010, and Windows 7 installed.

It was great seeing so many of our alumni this past Saturday at Mark Bansemer’s house in Reno at the OIT Alumni and Faculty BBQ. Along with President Maples and his wife Sara, Mark and Hallie Neupert, Larry and Alla Powers, Robin Thompson, Tracy Ricketts, Ralph, and Randy were also able to attend this year’s annual event.

Thanks to all the alumni that were able to attend and spend some time with their former colleagues and some of the OIT faculty and administrators. I will try to post some pictures soon.

OIT Ranks 7th Among Best Regional Colleges in the West

Here is some exciting news I thought you would all enjoy.

Oregon Institute of Technology earned the #7 spot among Best Regional Colleges in the Western U.S. in the 2011 edition of Best Colleges by U.S. News Media Group. In addition, Oregon Tech earned the #42 spot among Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs nationwide. The exclusive rankings, which include rankings of more than 1,400 schools nationwide, are available today at www.usnews.com/colleges, and will be published in the September issue of U.S.News & World Report, on newsstands starting Aug. 31.

Over the past two decades, the U.S.News college rankings, which group schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, have grown to be the most comprehensive research tool for students and parents considering higher-education opportunities.

Intel's Atom arrives on campus

Through the efforts of faculty members Jim Long and Jay Bockelman, as well as OIT Vice President Lita Colligan and Jim Fister of Intel, our department recently received a donation of 25 Intel Atom systems. The donation will equip a lab on the Klamath Falls campus and will allow students to learn on state-of-the-industry Intel architecture which will give them an advantage as they enter the workforce.

Intel Atom processors can scale to deliver PC-like performance in devices ranging from cars, smart phones and smart TV devices to razor-thin tablets and netbooks and more. More than 50 million netbooks have now been sold, almost all of which are based on the Intel Atom processor.

“Intel is pleased to provide this contribution of Intel Atom systems to OIT to help support the next generation of engineers as they complete their degrees,” said Morgan Anderson, Intel Oregon Higher Ed and Government Affairs Manager. “OIT and Intel have a rich history together, with over 200 OIT alumni working at the company, and several OIT grads serving in Intel’s top executive and technical positions.”

Renovating the Lab in PV 147

Along with being repainted, PV 147 is also having the walls

CREO is a puzzle game released by Michael Peddicord, a June 2010 graduate in SET. It won first place in Intel/Havoc's Physics Innovation contest last year. First place. Huge congratulations to him!

His website mpeddicord.com lists games he has made over the years under "Portfolio". CREO and his other games can be downloaded from there.

Also working on this latest release of CREO is Pete Angstadt - a graduate of the SET program last year. Pete spent a number of months working at EA and now works for Havok.

Hopefully their game will win again!

Jim Long Presents Paper at ASEE Conference

Eric Arrives!

Our newest Professor, Eric Egalite has now arrived on campus and is already moved into his office (PV 177). Eric will be teaching a variety of classes within our department, including some upper-level Embedded Systems classes beginning this fall. Most recently Eric was Senior Firmware Engineer at Hewlett-Packard.
